The department of anaesthesiology & Critical care of Nazareth hospital provides round the clock operation theatre and ICU services by 6 qualified anaesthesiologists and 2 medical officers.

Anaesthesia

The Department provides anaesthesia services to more than 3000 elective and emergency surgeries each year for General surgery, Paediatric surgery, Orthopaedics, O&G, ENT and Ophthalmology surgeries in 6 theatres equipped with state of art anaesthesia workstations from Datex Ohmeda in each theatre. Each workstation is equipped with an advanced monitoring system from Philips capable of doing invasive & non invasive monitoring along with sevoflurane and desflurane vaporizer for better patient safety and comfort. The operation theatres are well equipped with devices like fiberoptic intubation, advanced supraglotic airway and needle cricothyroidectomy for difficult airway situations.

Apart from providing general anaesthesia services from neonates to geriatrics with multiple co morbidities, the department is also providing regional anaesthesia services including labour analgesia and different modalities of post operative pain management.

Nazareth hospital is a pioneer in the field of Ultrasound guided nerve block in the North Eastern region with introduction of the Sonosite EDGE system. The nerve blocks are performed by qualified specialist for advanced regional and trauma anaesthesia.

The department is presently working on 4 different clinical researches in the field of anaesthesia and pain management.

Critical Care

Critical care medicine is a speciality that includes the management of patient with life threatening, frequently complex medical and surgical illness.

The intensive care unit is a 10 bedded closed unit manned by qualified intensivists and resident medical officers with support from experienced nursing staff in a ratio of 2 patients to one nurse. The unit is manned by one consultant and one resident doctor round the clock. The unit is supported by a full time physiotherapist, infection control team along with dedicated dietary department and round the clock haemodialysis facility.

The ICU has treated about 8000 critically ill patients since inception in 2005

The ICU is equipped with 8 numbers of mechanical ventilators (servo i & Servo S) from Maquet and Air liquid, an advanced Ultrasound machine from GE for bed side Echo and point of care ultrasound. Each bed is supported by multipara monitor capable of monitoring invasive & non invasive parameters for critically ill patients.

The ICU is also equipped with syringe pumps, fluid/blood warming system, high end motorised bed, pneumatic DVT pressure pump, air-mattress, portable NIV device, High air cleaning system, and biphasic defibrillator. Apart from treating the critically ill patients, counselling of the relative/family members are carried out routinely.

In the ICU various procedures are performed to support and identify critical illness. These include:

  • Invasive & Non invasive mechanical ventilation

  • Fibre –optic bronchoscopy

  • Percutaneous tracheostomy

  • Pericardiocentesis Abdomino/Thoracocentesis

  • USG guided Central venous catheterization and arterial canulation

  • Bed side Echocardiogram (ECHO) Electro encephalogram (EEG)

  • FAST/Extended FAST Ocular ultrasound

  • Temporary pacemaker placement

  • Holter monitoring

  • Invasive monitoring

  • Arterial blood gas analysis

  • ICD placement

  • Intra abdominal pressure monitoring etc.
